Mission: The Youth Awareness Club (YAC) is dedicated to expanding the number of students engaged in reading activities. Although we require our students to read for classroom work, many students do not read for pleasure. Americans are reading significantly less today than they did 10 or 20 years ago. The decline is even steeper among young adults. As a result, reading comprehension skills are eroding and this has direct and serious civic, social, cultural and economic implications. The YAC members will be encouraging student to read voluntarily by making READ posters using computer software that will incorporate pictures of students and faculty reading their favorite book. In addition students will be making digital books talks, making podcasts about books and making library ads showcasing books in our library. The YAC students also want to sell older books that are no longer needed in the library collection in order to raise money to buy new books.
