After beginning his coaching career as an assistant women's track and field coach at his alma mater, he was named Head Boys' and Girls' Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Antonian. "It took us about a year to get things going, but we got it going in my second year." At UMass Dartmouth, Lovell was named Assistant Athletic Director and Head Track & Field Coach. At UMass, Lovell guided the men’s and women’s track & field teams to a second place conference finish, which was the highest placing in conference for UMass in 10 years.
